He Lives! Easter 2013

HE LIVES

I serve a risen Saviour,
He's in the world today;
I know that He is living,
Whatever men may say;
I see His hand of mercy,
I hear His voice of cheer,
And just the time I need Him
He's always near.

####Chorus:

He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives
today!
He walks with me and He talks with me
Along life's narrow way.
He lives, He live, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives:
He lives within my heart.

In all the world around me
I see His loving care,
And tho my heart grows weary
I never will despair;
I know that He is leading
Thro' all the stormy blast,
The day of His appearing
Will come at last.

####

Rejoice, rejoice, O Christian,
Lift up your voice and sing
Eternal hallelujahs
To Jesus Christ the King!
The hope of all who seek Him,
The help of all who find,
None other is so loving,
So good and kind.

Brunch...The Most Important Meal of the Day

Before first vacationing in Nashville a couple of years ago, I could never see the appeal to brunch. In fact, I don't believe I had ever participated in the two-in-one meal. Most likely because the greater Tallassee area is pretty lame. Yeah, that's most likely the culprit.

Anyhoo, I now have a love affair with the little slice of heaven I call brunch. Maybe it's because I first fell in love with Nashville  over a brunch or maybe it's because it's completely acceptable to drink champagne (mixed with a splash of fruit juice, of course) before what most would deem an acceptable hour.

Nashville has no shortage of sweet spots to brunch with the bunch, and since no Music City vacay is complete without participating in a good brunch, I've compiled a brunch travel guide for those who may be visiting the area.

1) MARCHE ARTISAN FOOD

The fact that this spot made it to the top of the list is no accident. It is by far my favorite spot to brunch in Nashville. Located in East Nashville, the atmosphere is superb, and the food is a grade higher. They boast a full coffee & espresso bar and have mimosas that will rock your world. (My favorite is the Cognac Mimosa.)
Marche offers a Saturday Brunch and a Sunday Brunch menu that differ from one another. In addition, both menus change weekly. Some may find this inconvenient since they cannot hold fast to their favorite dish, but I love it because it affords me the opportunity to try something new. Because their menu changes so often, it's hard for me to recommend just one dish, but I have never had anything that I didn't absolutely love. I generally get the crepes because the ingredients with which they are paired are usually right up my alley.
Because of limited seating, you should be prepared to sit with a couple of people that you don't know. This is not a guarantee depending on your party-size and how busy it is. I have experienced both brunching with just my bunch and brunching with my bunch + strangers. Being the "people-person" that I am, I love this opportunity to meet new people. However, I know that not everyone loves being forced to dine with strangers.
***Good ol' Boys beware! If you are the traditional eggs, grits, sausage, and biscuit person, it pains me to say that Marche IS NOT for you. They offer more fancified food. I felt like I needed to include this because while I love it, it's not for everybody. For example, I would never recommend Marche to my parents because my Daddy would hate it.

Click here for a link to their website. They post all current breakfast, brunch, lunch, & dinner menus online.

2) MAD DONNAS

The boys introduced us to mad donnas after a failed trip to Marche. (Jenna & I are not the type of girls that can throw our hair up in a pony tail, schmere on tinted moisturizer, and dab on some lip gloss. We aim to be perfect 10's on vacation.Unfortunately, this led to a LATE brunch and Marche didn't wait on us.)
Les be honest, mad donnas made it into my heart because of their beverages. It was here that I gathered the courage to try a Bloody Mary, and thank goodness I did!!! They have a full on Mary bar. You order your poison and they hand you the glass with ice and vodka. It's at this point you head to the bloody assembly line (in my best British accent). Being a newbie, this was a huge source of stress for me because I had no clue what I wanted to include in my beverage. Jenna helped me through it, and it was superb. If you're not a BM person, they also have a 2 for $6 Mimosa deal, and they have lots of different juices to choose from. No assembly required.

As far as entrees go, I would highly recommend The Big Don. It's delish! Description: Grilled Provence Tuscan bread stuffed with eggs, bacon, pepper jack cheese, tomato, and Dijon mayonnaise served with cheddar cheese grits or rosemary potatoes. Mouth watering yet?

Click here for a link to their menu.

3) SKY BLUE CAFE

We experienced Sky Blue Cafe this week and will definitely be going back. Seating is limited so be on the lookout for a wait. We arrived at 10am and had a 15 minute wait, but that was also on a Monday. However, the food was definitely worth waiting an hour for!! I first heard about SBC on the Internet and the stuffed french toast pancakes were recommended. While they sounded great, I saw them being delivered to a table and decided they would require elastic-waisted pants to order.
Jenna and I met up with a beloved ex-coworker of mine who made the move to East Nasty, and we all ordered the exact same thing: Coffee, Pineapple Mimosas, and The Tuscan 2.0. We saw the dish being delivered to another table while we waited to order, and it took everything we had not to ask for a bite. But don't worry, we're not those people so we waited to get one of our own. Description: Two eggs over easy on toasted French bread, topped with pesto, tomato, garlic, chilies, melted Parmesan cheese, and a drizzle of olive oil. Served with a side of fruit. Yummy, right?

Click here for their brunch menu.

Above is not the Tuscan 2.0, but it sure looks highly edible.

4)  BOSCOS: RESTAURANT & BREWING CO.

Oh my gosh! This brunch turned into three hours--we ate so much we had to sit it out for a bit. Note: this is not a requirement to eat here. Surely, you have more self-control than I.
Located near Vanderbilt University, this brewery offers more than just exceptional beers. We visited Boscos during their Sunday Jazz Brunch which includes a live jazz band. The music was great, and it wasn't overpowering to where you had to shout across the table at one another. I was also surprised when we were able to be seated immediately with a party of 8. (Boscos has a much larger seating area than the previously listed bruncheries.)
The menu had many options which spiked my indecision. Jenna and I were looking at the same two options so we decided to each order one and split. Option 1 Description: Oskar Benedict. A toasted English muffin with asparagus, crab meat, Canadian bacon, two poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. Option 2 Description: Crab Cake Benedict. Toasted English muffin with two poached eggs, fresh lump crab cake, sliced avocado, and hollandaise sauce. Both served with a side of cheese grits.
We also decided to try out the dessert menu. (Are you starting to understand how we ate ourselves miserable?) Boscos offered several daily desserts as well as some classics. We sampled pretty much every dessert other than the apple crisp. One of the dailies was Creme Brulle Cheesecake. It was divine!! I had the Bread Pudding of the day--pineapple white chocolate. Sounds weird; tastes amazing! The Chocolate Mocha Brownie was also ordered. If I'm being honest, the description sounded better than it tasted. (Steer clear.) Last but not least, the Boscos Gelato. It's made with in-house brewed beer and was delicious!
***Boscos is located near a lot of cute boutiques and shops so it's great to visit and do a little shopping before or after your meal.

5) PANCAKE PANTRY

This place is not a new topic in this blog. I love me some Pancake Pantry! Obviously, judging by its name, they are famous for their pancakes, as well they should be. Be prepared for a line that goes from the door and curves around the sidewalk. Of course, we time it correctly and hit it up around 1 or 2:00 so we don't have to wait.

**Pancake pantry is across the street from Boscos so good look making the decision between the two.

There is not enough room in cyber space for me to go on and on about what I love at the Pancake Pantry and why I love it so I'll just recommend two cakes. First and foremost, the Sweet Potato Pancakes. These little babies are so delicious, I found a copycat recipe, made them at home, and blogged about it. Why do I love these? For starters, their consistency is spot on. They're  not spongy like most pancakes. It's hard to describe it so I'm going to go with dense. I also feel like I'm being more healthy since sweet potatoes are a super-food, ya know. (However, no matter what you order it is almost impossible not to over-indulge when visiting PP.) Lastly, I love these cakes because of their topping: cinnamon cream syrup. This stuff is so good I'd bathe in it!
Sometimes I do not want anything sweet for breakfast. It's at these times that I order my second recommendation: Santa Fe Cornmeal Pancakes. Description: cornmeal pancakes with chunks of bacon, cheddar cheese, and roasted green chilies cooked inside. PP recommends topping these cakes with maple syrup, salsa, and sour cream. (I say YES, but hold the maple syrup.) It took me a WHILE to gather up the nerve to order these cakes, as they sound like a gamble. I like to stay in the safe zone when it comes to food so it was a big deal for me to venture out of the traditional pancake choices. Quite honestly, Jenna and I had been curious about these cakes since our first visit and she was the one to order them first. After sampling hers, I decided to order them on my next trip.
If you have never had cornmeal pancakes then you don't know what you're missing! The pairing of bacon, cheese, and chilies is divine with the cornmeal. A dab of sour cream and salsa sets it off. I look forward to trying to recreate these at home!

So there you have it, my top 5 choices for brunching in Nashville. I hope this is useful when you're planning your next Nashville vacay. If you haven't visited this city, start planning now! It has become my favorite vacation spot. :) :)

Springing

Happy first day of Spring, y'all!!! I think it is safe to say that I officially have spring fever. Looking down, I am sporting a white tee (don't judge, it's no longer taboo), cotton chinos, and thong sandals. While I may be stuck inside all day, I am fully prepared and dressed for the occasion. I even dosed up on my allergy meds.

Spring is not my absolute favorite season, but it always gets me really excited for things--or seasons--to come! So, to honor the beginning of this season, I am listing indicators that we're springing!

1. Daffodils are blooming. They actually bloomed earlier than usual this year because of the warm winter we had here in 'bama.

2.  Bradford Pear and Dogwood trees are blooming. Technically, there are several types of trees blooming, but these are my faves :) :)

3.  Turkey season has kicked off. Pepper that head!

4.  We are finally adjusting to Daylight Saving Time. I'm pretty sure most of us could be mistaken for  the walking dead two weeks ago.

5.  Your car is yellow.

6.  The new accessory you want for your outfit is a tan. Hello white legs!

7.  You start thinking more about fitness because bikini season is no longer a hypothetical.

8.  The birds are doing some serious chirping in the mornings.

9. You feel silly wearing a sweater. Even a really cute one!

10.  You can't log on to Facebook without someone posting a picture of themselves at the beach......and you're at work. Ugh, jerks.

Spring Break To-Do

Like most people, I benefit greatly by having a to-do list. I'm as scatter-brained as they come so I need something to keep me on point. In fact, I make a to-do list about every other day. These lists include important things like "pay such-and-such bill" to small things like "put chap stick in my purse". No matter the size of the task, the only way I can guarantee that it'll get done is if it's on my list.

Spring Break is next week (you can't hear me but I'm hooping and hollering), and I want to make sure that it is equal parts fun and productive. I've decided to make a to-do list for this spring break because I know that if I don't, I'll be pretty slothful. And so, here's my to-do list:

1. Spend some quality time with Mom and Kelly while having a blast and singing along with Elton John to "Tiny Dancer"

2.  Actually leave early in the morning on Saturday for Nashville. (Mine and Jenna's "early" turns into mid-afternoon on the usual.)

3.  Go my very first hockey game. Go Preds!!

4.  Pack as much into my short little trip to Nash-vegas as possible!!

5.  Visit my grandparents.

6.  Trim my shrubbery, move my geraniums outside, de-weed, and do some cleaning up in the yard.

7. Get a base tan for MULLET TOSS

8.  Go to my first Auburn baseball game. (I know, it is ridiculous that I've never been.)

9.  Start and finish a book--preferably a fun, easy read with no thinking involved.

10. Mop my floors.

11. Read my SIX magazines that have been piling up for the last few months that I haven't even cracked open.

This is a working list so I'll be adding to it as I think of things.

Saturday Six 03.16.13

What I'm reading. I've had my nose in the book of Hebrews as of late. There are so many reminders in this book about how lucky we are to have a Savior like Jesus. Before He came, priests had to shed the blood of a pure animal once each year to account for the people's sins. Jesus's blood was pure enough to cover the sins of the entire world forever--and it only had to happen once. There sure is truth in the old hymn "There's Power in the Blood".

What I'm eating. This should be about what I'm not eating. Sweets. I am so proud of myself because I haven't baked ALL WEEK LONG. (I may or may not have eaten a peanut butter pie by myself last weekend, though.) I'm giving credit for this big feat to the fact that my Pure Barre classes were moved to 5:30 this week so I wasn't getting home until 7:00. That doesn't really allow much time to bake. Whatever, the reason--lack of time or sheer will power--I'm proud of myself.

What products I'm using. I am giving Beauty Balm by Urban Decay a shot this weekend. Jenna and I wandered into Ulta last weekend and found ourselves in the UD section. There was a lovely worker who demonstrated this miracle BB cream on Jenna. (I refused because I knew I'd cave and buy it and I didn't need to spend the money.) We both fell in love, and Jenna took it home with her. Fortunately for me, she received a trial size with her purchase, and being the good friend that she is, gave it to me. If it looks half as good on my skin as it did Jenna's, I'm sure I'll be walking back into Ulta in the next week. Sigh.

What I'm listening to. I've been jamming out to old-school Motion City Soundtrack. They always know how to cheer you up and make you jam out. Their album, I Am the Movie, takes me back to the Warped Tour in Atlanta when I got caught in the mosh pit. Yep, lil ol' me was in the middle of a mosh pit with a bunch of punk rockers. Bet you didn't know I was so legit. ;)

What I'm looking forward to. You better believe I'm counting down the days to Spring Break!! [Six Days] More on my SB To Do List later.

I'm also looking forward to tomorrow's Saint Patty's Day celebration with friends at the lake. While I'm a little iffy on getting into a bathing suit this early, the weather is so beautiful I don't think I'll be able to resist.

What quote I'm loving.

5 Lessons Learned in My 1st Month of Pure Barre

This past week marked my first 30 days of Pure Barre. While sickness prevented me from ending strong, I am very proud of myself. I went from being out of shape and lazy to averaging four days a week by the barre. I have been working out (off and on) for about 5-6 years, and I can honestly say that this is the first time I've been able to take the "hate" out of my love/hate outlook on fitness. Many days, it's the thought of going to Pure Barre that has gotten me through. And without fail, I always feel a little sad when I am unable to go. This is definitely a phenomenon as I've never felt guilty for not breaking a sweat.

Here are a few lessons I learned while struggling, sweating, and shaking my bootay off:

1) Your body listens to your brain. The mind--it's a powerful thing. And Pure Barre is definitely a mind game. The whole point of the small, precise movements throughout the class is to exhaust a targeted muscle group. It's easy to tell when your muscles have reached the point of fatigue because you start shaking like a leaf. It's at that point your body is telling your mind that it can take no more. In fact, I can clearly hear my thighs yelling "NO MORE!!!" throughout the three "thigh sprints". It's at this critical moment that your brain has only one option. It must say, "You can handle it. Keep it up." If that is the message you send to that muscle group being targeted, somehow, someway, you keep it up. But, if your mind caves in to your muscles, you stop. You take a break. And, as the instructors repeatedly remind you, the shaking represents the change in your body you want so badly. You  must  embrace it; you cannot give in to it. Similarly, in life, there are going to be times when your body wants to give up. Badly. But if you keep your mind strong and focused, your body will follow. Everything's a mind game when you think about it.

2) It's a commitment. It doesn't matter how much you love Pure Barre, there are going to be days when you just don't feel up to it. But you have to honor that commitment. [Seriously. Or else you'll have to fork out $20 for a no-show fee.] Changes in your body don't happen over night. You have to be committed in order to see results. Similarly, most things in life do not offer instant-gratification. Sometimes you have to wait, be patient, and stay committed in order to see a change.

3) It's not easy. Fo' sho. I figured I wouldn't really break a sweat since there's no jumping around or big movements. I definitely thought wrong. I thought my legs were in pretty good shape considering I hadn't worked out on a regular basis in a while. I definitely thought wrong. If staying in shape were easy, Alabama wouldn't have a shockingly high obesity rate. Most things in life that are worth it are not easy.

4) Sometimes you gotta be a fighter. As the instructors say when your shaking like you just saw a ghost, you have to fight for that change. And if there's one thing PB has taught me, I'm not a natural borne fighter. But I'm learning, and I'm fighting. And I'm seeing that you have to fight for the things you really want. Sometimes, that's the only way you'll get them.

5) Everybody can use a little bit of help. There are times when I think I'm killing a move. I mean, really killing it. Everyone else seems to be tiring faster than me. I can see the concentration in their faces to hold that move. And I think to myself, "Get it, girl! You're doing awesome!" And then, the instructor comes along and corrects my form..... Even though I felt a burn before the correction, it was nothing like what I felt after the correction. Suddenly, I'm sporting that look of concentration like everyone else on the barre. And, if I hadn't been open to a little help, I wouldn't experience what I came there to experience. Sometimes, in life, we have to realize that we need a little help to get the job done correctly. And that's okay.

I cannot wait to start my second month of PB! I am so excited to see more changes in my body and learn a few more lessons. :)

The Saturday Six

What I'm reading. I've been doing a lot of Internet reading on Pure Barre as of late. I am still completely absorbed with PB. I love reading tips on techniques and blog entries devoted to the fitness phenom.

What I'm eating. Wanna talk about delicious? This week, I discovered Mayfield's Snickerdoodle ice cream. I absolutely love those soft cookies, and this  no-need-to-fire-up-the-oven dessert has tiny bits of the dough hidden in the cinnamon flavored ice cream.

What products I'm using. Mrs. Meyers cleaners. If you haven't at least purchased yourself a hand soap, then you're missing out. These products have the best scents. Basil and Lavendar are my faves. They have become so popular that even big stores like Wal-Mart and Target carry them. Go out and buy one; thank me later.

What I'm listening to. I've been jamming out to Chris Carrabba's voice crooning out old-school Dashboard Confessional songs this week. While everything I've read about the band suggests they haven't broken up, I haven't heard any new material by them in quite some time. But that's okay, their classic stuff has been keeping me company, and that's alright by me.

What I'm looking forward to. I'm looking forward to tonight's alumni ball. A friend of mine asked if I'd like to go and I, seeing a chance to get dolled up and squeeze into one of my old prom dresses, said yes. Even got a spray tan for this event. Pictures to come later.

What quote I'm loving.
Now that's just good smarts
Hope everyone has a delightful weekend! Happy Saturday!!

Friday's Letters 03.01.13

Dear Attempted "Smoothie" Dinner Diet,
You were an epic fail. I really thought this would work since you, (a) taste delicious, (b) you are filling--or so I thought, and (c) I have lost the desire to cook. Turns out only (a) and (c) are actually true. The ice cream and brownies took care of (b). Guess I'm just not that great about depriving myself.

Dear Parents,
Could you please do a better job of teaching your kids about editing what comes out of their mouth? Just because someone looks tired doesn't mean that has to be the first thing out of your mouth when you see them. Just because someone's hair doesn't look awesome doesn't mean you have to point it out. If I had a nickel for each inappropriate/rude comment I got in a week, well, let's just say I wouldn't need to have a day job. [Disclaimer: I'm fully aware that you probably do teach your child this, and they're just being a child. If they listened and acted upon every lesson you ever taught then my kids would be geniuses.]

Dear Spring,
Hurry! I cannot wait to plant some flowers for you!

Dear Spray Tan,
I'm so glad you're on me. I forgot how much better I look with a tan. I could almost get away with not wearing a full face of makeup. (I thought I could until I got the "you look tired" comment.)

Dear Jamie,
You should probably be cooler so you can have more to write about in your Friday's Letters.
